Early Irish Saints: Christians by Name, yet Pagans at Heart
One of the most peculiar facts about early Irish Christianity is its apparent reluctance to adopt foreign saints as local patrons. In contrast to the flood of Latin loanwords into Irish, almost no Roman, or otherwise non-Irish, cults were introduced. The lecture will explore the reasons for this resistance to innovation in the area of devotion, mainly by reference to female saints.
